Om Mani Padme Hum, is probably the most widely known Buddhist prayer, found all over the world. This sacred mantra is inscribed on mani stones, tibetan prayer flags, rock walls, village entrances, at temples and auspicious sites, and in prayer wheels, jewelry, oraments etc. It is difficult to translate into english all of the many meanings that this prayer encompasses, but literally the six syllables are "Hail the jewel in the heart of lotus" or
|
"Behold! The jewel in the lotus!"
It is thought that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this one prayer, and that the recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom.
Speaking the prayer aloud, writing it, or viewing the written form are all said to benifit ones karma, by invoking the peaceful & benevolent blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. Also called Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit), he is a protector, and thus the invocation is chanted as a mantra of protection against evil and harm.
